THE flood-ravaged Far North Coast was declared a natural disaster zone yesterday as water threatened homes, forced evacuations and ruined holidays for thousands of tourists.
Hundreds of homes were evacuated and several families rescued on Friday night and early yesterday at Kyogle, Murwillumbah and Chinderah after more than 300 millimetres of rain fell in just three hours.
Authorities said Kyogle, with a population of 3000, experienced its second-highest flood peak on record at 18.1 metres.

Cyclone Helen heads for Darwin
A cyclone warning is current for coastal and island communities from Kalumburu in Western Australia to Cape Hotham in the Northern Territory, including Darwin.
There is going to be a lot of rainfall associated with it crossing the coast and there is a very good chance that there will be flooding in the low-lying areas and streams rising
CYCLONE shelters in Darwin opened their doors last night in expectation of fierce winds and violent rain as tropical cyclone Helen edged closer to the city.
Residents were told to expect winds of up to 130km/h.

FLASH flooding has closed roads and damaged homes in southeast Queensland, while big seas have gouged beaches as wild weather continues along the coast.
The Bureau of Meteorology is expecting Cyclone Helen to move into the western Gulf of Carpentaria tomorrow and over far northern Queensland on Sunday, bringing rain and strong winds.
In the Sunshine Coast hinterland, the road to Kilcoy was cut by floodwaters for several hours today, stranding dozens of motorists, before being reopened late this afternoon.
Electricity distributor Energex said around 6000 homes were blacked out in Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts earlier today. Most had power restored by this afternoon.

The floods have forced the evacuation of thousands of residents from the northern NSW town of Kyogle as floodwaters peaked at the second highest level on record.
Some parts of northern NSW received 300mm of rain in three hours overnight
Heavy rains continue to batter the NSW north coast, with beaches from the Queensland border to Sydney facing closure today.

A MAN has been killed by a falling tree and the Indian Pacific train has been halted in NSW as wild weather continues to lash the eastern seaboard.
Heavy rain and strong winds have swept across five states as the area battens down for another burst of wild weather over the weekend.
Broken Hill is among the hardest hit areas and parts of Victoria and South Australia have been affected by flash flooding.
Weatherzone.com.au meteorologist Matt Pearce said another major event is unfolding as storms and widespread rain develop across South Australia.
In northwestern NSW, heavy rain dumped a record 171mm at Coonamble since midnight and 141mm at nearby Coonabarabran.
Many local roads leading to Coonabarabran have been cut by flooding but the town itself has sustained minor damage, a State Emergency Service spokesman says.
Across much of Victoria today, gale-force winds replaced the humidity and flash flooding of yesterday.
Scores of trees were uprooted and hurled onto cars, across roads and into buildings
"We have been getting a three to four calls a minute (for assistance), mostly in Melbourne with Ballarat and Bendigo the main rural centres affected," Mr Wiebusch said.

EMERGENCY workers were cleaning up parts of northeastern Australia today after widespread flooding caused by what meteorologists said was a freak, once-in-a-century weather event.
Dozens of people were evacuated from homes and cars and many roads closed because of rising flood waters and fallen trees after the Sunshine Coast was lashed with days of torrential rain
"Major flooding has affected residents in the Noosa River, Lake Cooroibah and Lake Cootharaba area and even though we are confident the worst is now past us, it may take several days for waters to return to normal levels,'' he said.
The dumping of more than 1000mm of rain on the Sunshine Coast has been attributed to a once-in-a-century weather event.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Jeff Callaghan said the low pressure system over southeast Queensland that caused the downpour was a freak event not seen at this time of year since the 1800s.

HUNDREDS of Victorians were last night facing the heartbreaking decision of whether to abandon their homes and flee as rising floodwaters swept through the state's southeast.
Rainfall of up to 300mm was recorded in Victoria's high country in the 24 hours to 9am yesterday, while up to 60mm was recorded in lower-lying areas of Gippsland. Floodwaters poured down from the high country yesterday and the state's Bureau of Meteorology issued severe weather warnings.

EMERGENCY preparations are underway tonight to evacuate hundreds of residents as a king tide threatened to further swamp a flooded town on Victoria's south-east coast.
Mr Gray said that while the 1970 floods were always talked about as the “biggest ever” but only 97,000 megalitres a day was released by opening the floodgates to the Glenmaggie Weir upstream. “This was 140,000 (megalitres) a day. That's a tremendous amount of water.”

TORRENTIAL rain pelting Gippsland has flooded roads and is flowing towards houses.
The wildest weather in a decade has shut the Princes Highway between Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance. The highway is also closed at Nicholson.
Rising waters are reportedly lapping at several houses in Bairnsdale.
Heavy rain is also bolstering Victoria's biggest water catchment, the Thomson Dam.
Rain lashed Gippsland overnight. A second burst of rainfall and damaging wind gusts is forecast today.
Several rivers including the Mitchell, Snowy, Genoa and Cann are being monitored.
Gabo Island got 90mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am, Mallacoota 87mm, Orbost 65mm and Sale 27mm.
Melbourne is forecast to receive up to 20mm of rain today.

GALE-FORCE winds and flooding are again forecast for the NSW Hunter Valley and central coast, a week after wild storms swept through the region.
Conditions were forecast to deteriorate overnight, with severe weather expected in Sydney and the storm-damaged areas to the north, said Rob Webb, manager of weather services at the NSW Bureau of Meteorology.
Many farms in the Hunter area, after getting more than 300mm of rain in two days, were now unworkable as they were covered with sand and silt.

TWO people are dead and five missing in NSW flood waters caused by wild weather that has forced Premier Morris Iemma to declare a natural disaster in the state's Hunter and Central Coast regions.
State Emergency Service (SES) has received thousands of calls for assistance so far from people who have suffered damage across the Hunter, Mid North Coast, Central Coast and Sydney.
At least 200,000 people were without power overnight in areas from the Hunter Valley to Sydney.
